The last time I presented this program, the stock market was at an all time high and we were not at war. It had the highest participation

of any presentation I made in Atlanta in the past 10 years. Are the topics of  regrets, mistakes and missed opportunities” relevant in 2003? That is not a hard question in these hard times…

Dr. Arthur Freeman, author of 26 books and former training director of Center for Cognitive Therapy, University of Pennsylvania.

We are finding that many childhood mental health problems could possibly suffering from misdiagnoses. The relationship between ADHD, Impulse Control disorders, and behavior problems in children could have a common thread. New findings looking at behavioral patterns as well as the effects of pharmaceuticals are making us all rethink childhood behavior.

Robert Montgomery, Ph.D., founder of Reinforcement+ and consultant to public and private schools in Georgia and Alabama.

The understanding and application of ethical principles challenge us on a daily basis. Just when you thought you understood how to conduct your practice, new challenges arise.

1. Overcoming Depression : A Cognitive Therapy Approach for Taming the Depression Beast
by Mark Gilson, Arthur Freeman

Format: Paperback, 160pp.
ISBN: 0158131681
Publisher: Graywind Publications www.graywindpublications.com  (720) 406-1811
Pub. Date: April  1999

From the Publisher
Depression is the most prevalent and potentially one of the most dangerous of emotional problems. It is often called the "common cold" of emotional difficulties. Our intention in writing this book was to bring an effective form of treatment to those suffering from mood problems. As we all know, there are many forms of questionable treatments out there, most not supported by outcome research. Cognitive therapy has over 40 years of studies showing how effective it can be in bringing people long lasting relief from depression, no matter how severe or where it came from. That does not mean it is easy or does not require insight or effort. The BEAST is an acronym for Body/Biology, Emotion, Action, Situation, and Thinking. The book is organized around these components. When any one of them gets out of balance, the potential for mood difficulties increases. By providing methods to bring things back into equilibrium this manual helps those struggling with depression to improve their mood.

About the Authors

Mark Gilson is the founder of Atlanta Center for Cognitive Therapy (ACCT), established in 1985 as psychotherapy and training facility. He is a fellow of the Academy of Clinical Psychology, American Board of Professional Psychology. Dr. Gilson was a post-doctoral fellow at the world-renowned Center for Cognitive Therapy at the University of Pennsylvania, where he studied with Aaron T. Beck, M.D. ACCT training and certification program can be found on the Internet. Both he and Dr. Freeman have collaborated in training and writing projects over the past 15 years.

Arthur Freeman, Ed.D., is professor and chair of the Department of Psychology and director of the doctoral training program in clinical psychology at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. He is also professor in the core doctoral faculty and director of the cognitive therapy program at the Adler School of Professional Psychology in Chicago. He has published 18 professional books that have been translated into many languages. Dr. Freeman is past president of the Association for the Advancement of Behavior Therapy.

What People Are Saying
Taming the Depression BEAST is a remarkably fine workbook for almost anyone suffering from sporadic or chronic depression. It succinctly and clearly provides many cognitive-behavioral methods and people experiencing depression can promptly put to good use. I highly recommend it. -- (Albert Ellis, Ph.D.)  —Albert Ellis

This new patient treatment manual sets a high mark for presenting therapy in a clear and accessible manner to patients. It contains the fundamentals of treatment and self-help for the depressed individual in a readable and engaging format. The concept of BEAST (Biology, Emotion, Affect, Situation, and Thinking) allows for an easy conceptualization of the components of mood and at the same time is whimsical and intriguing. It strikes just the right balance, and I believe it is a refined contribution to the psychotherapist's tool kit for providing empirically supported treatment that helps people improve their mood and function better in their lives. -- (Aaron T. Beck, M.D., psychiatrist)  —Aaron T. Beck

Gilson & Freeman's Taming the Depression BEAST, a client workbook, will be an important addition to the field. Easily readable, it communicates complex concepts in an understandable manner, and the take-home message- that depression is a treatable illness- comes through clearly. It provides accurate information to clients about both cognitive therapy and antidepressant medications. There is no doubt that this manual will be helpful to many clients and their families. -- (Charles Nemeroff, M.D., Ph.D., Chariman, Psychiatry, Emory School of Medicine)  —Charles Nemeroff

2. Woulda, Coulda, Shoulda : Overcoming Regrets, Mistakes, and Missed Opportunities
by Dr. Arthur Freeman, Rose Dewolf

Format: Paperback, 1st ed., 265pp.
ISBN: 0060973358
Publisher: HarperTrade
Pub. Date: September  1990

Book Description
Who of us can claim never to have made a mistake, missed a goal, regretted a choice, or suffered because of another's action? For those who suffer from a constant sense of regret about the past, who feel their present lives have been immutably shaped by actions they could or should or would have taken but didn't, real help is at hand. In clear, uncomplicated language, Dr. Arthur Freeman, a leading exponent of cognitive therapy, and his colleague Rose DeWolf, a skillful translator of the cognitive method, describe the techniques and provide exercises that will enable readers to actually "unblock" the past. The authors demonstrate that woulda/coulda/shoulda thinking can be unlearned and that this process can be accomplished in a relatively short period of time.

3. Essential Psychopharmacology of Depression and Bipolar Disorder
by Stephen M. Stahl (Author), Nancy Muntner

Book Description
Essential Psychopharmacology has established itself as the preeminent source of information in its field, and this book draws on the second edition to provide a resource for all clinicians involved in the treatment of depression and bipolar disorder. Stressing the basic neuroscience of the mood disorders, the fully updated text and color illustrations enable readers to understand how the various antidepressants and mood stabilizers work in their patients. It contains new information on the pharmacokinetics of antidepressants, including the role of the cytochrome P450 enzyme system and neuropeptides including substance P. The mechanisms of action of newer antidepressants, including the latest SSRIs, are prominently and authoritatively reviewed. Psychiatrists, primary care physicians and mental health professionals can depend on this book for an up-to-date account of the psychopharmacology of mood disorders, and for essential information in planning treatment approaches.

Back to HOMEPAGE

1.)     Do I have to own the books listed to come to the workshops?

(Books to be announced shortly. We will include Overcoming Depression: Taming the Depression BEAST by Gilson and Freeman).

No, you do not. If you want the bonus four CE hours, you must read the book and take the test that will be e-mailed, faxed or mailed to you. You can return the successfully completed test within 30 receiving it for credit. If you attend and do not complete the test on the book, you still get 6 CE hours for attendance. You can order Overcoming Depression: Taming the Depression BEAST directly by calling (800) 211-8378.

2.) Can I borrow someone else's book instead of buying it?

The Deadline for completing the CE exam will be 30 days after you attend.

5.) When are the CE exams supposed to be returned to get bonus credit?

For the books in current circulation, you have 30 days from the date of receipt by fax, email, or mail to complete to avoid a $5. per week penalty fee. We do not want the tests to come in over a long period of time, so please follow the deadlines. We will not register CE unless you send it in on a timely basis or pay the late fees. You must have a minimum of 70% correct on each test to get credit.

6.) Can I fax you my test when I am finished?

Please don't !! Mail it to our Center: Atlanta Center for Cognitive Therapy/ 1772 Century Blvd. NE/ Atlanta, GA 30345. OR if you decide to receive it via email, you can send it back with email. Hooray for technology.

This usually has to be done before you register. Sorry, we do not keep up with each state's changes in rules for each profession. If you have doubts, call your state professional organization.

10.) Why do you charge late fees?

We try to offer workshops with a real value and without a high cost. One of the bigger expenses is processing late registrations and other clerical work. Yes, but you have to pay the difference for cost. The videotape is $85. If you paid $60. for your tuition and then miss the workshop, you have a second chance, but the difference owed would be $25.There will NOT be a videotape of the Ethics program.

12.) Will there be free lunch?

Right now, lunch is on your own. We have been known to get sponsors to supply refreshments and lunch, and this MAY happen again. Keep you eyes on this page if that is of interest to you.
